Rocket & Zula | Kittens

Aloha Sprinklerinos,

Kittens are the greatest.

Rocket and Zula are 10 weeks old, brother and sister and frankly, the cutest little things ever to grace the feline world.

First days are scawee.

Zzzzzz.

'What's that!'

Awwweeeee.

We decided that after a year and four months with no kitty (RIP Mindy), it was time to add to the household and when a cousin's cat had babies, it seemed like the right time.

We've had them six days and so far they are doing great. Zula (the black girl) likes to scamp about, play with toys and sleep on or by your lap. Rocket (the tabby boy) is a little more shy and prefers to fine hidey-holes to sleep or curl up with Zula. They both have crazy moments where they pounce on each other and race around- they're having one as I type!

We plan on making them indoor/outdoor cats but for now, whilst they're getting used to this house, they are living in my office and I'm doing approximately zero hours work and 24 hours kitty watching, it's bliss.

I'll of course be updating you on them and letting you in on all their adventures, but for now, here are a few snaps of them I took earlier. I tell you, photographing kittens is a lot more challenging than I thought it would be! Sheesh!

If you have any tips for helping kittens settle in or anything you think I should be aware of, let me know. I had kittens as a child, worked in a cattery as a student and have done a fair bit of reading but you can never know too much, yanno?

More snaps coming soon.

Toodlepip!

xx

  2. awh they are so cute... they only thing I can really suggest is staying in the room with them but quietly simply so they get used to the presence of humans or if you wish for things to calm down a little smidge a plug in catnip pumpy thing (great use of the english language) it doesn't affect you or them but helps them feel calm which is good. www.justalittlebitoftwaddle.blogspot.co.uk

    1. Catnip actually has no effect on cats this young, usually they're about a year old before it has any.

  8. When I got my cat I used to call her by name wherever I would go. So she didn't felt scared when being alone in a room and also she got really attached to me and followed my wherever I would go. Although she might not be meow-ing after me at all I always called her name so she could be sure where I was. Maybe that's a good thing to do in the beginning to give them the feeling of always being there and that they are safe. Have fun with your kitties, it's the best time when they are that young :)

  25. They're adorable Louise!

I got some kittens in November last year. They're so cute, but a pain sometimes.
My only advice is not to leave them alone in a room with anything they could potentially break, climb up onto (if you don't want them to) or play with because they find a way! Haha.
Having grown up with cats all of my life you would've thought I'd of realised but I didn't... And I learnt the hard way!
    Otherwise, have fun with them!:)

  28. Aww, they are so cute!

The one advice I have, as you mention that Rocket is more shy, is to just let them do their own thing. If they go to the litter box normally, eat and drink normally and just act normally, then letting them do whatever they want is the best. I have one skittish cat and I would always just let her come to me, and if I came to her it was through play time. A favourite have always been feather stick toys.

Also, you probably know this already, but I just have to mention it - don't forget to spay both of them. Cats can get pregnant as early as 5 months old, when they're still babies. :/ Spaying also prevents cats from marking their territory - they do that a lot when they're hormonal, which makes life easier for everyone.

That is all I have for now, haha. :) But they are so young now, you're in for so many adventures as they grow older, hit the puberty age, develop their personalities, etc. :)

  33. They are so so cute! Kittens are the best, nothing nicer than a little happy ball of fluff to greet you after a hard day :)

One tip I have is to buy them some urinary help cat food (mostly dry foods but I'm sure you can get wet food too!) as they can get little crystals (Struvite crystals) that block up their bladder and they can't pee.

Unfortunately we lost our cat to this problem two weeks ago; it just comes on suddenly, there are no symptoms or anything so by the time you find out it's too late which is horrible!

Purina or Royal Canin are the best for those kinds of cat foods :) xx

I love how mischievous they are and when they try snuggle in the smallest spaces like in between the sofa haha, I found that when they get to about 6 they become such lovely lap cats and will always be there in the evening to cuddle and purr! I'm sure you will want so many more (if Matt lets you;) and Darcy will love them and I grew up with cats and I find they made me more social even though cats can't talk haha (I wish). Anyway I've gone a bit and I hope you read and buy cat toys with catnip in because they go crazy for it wowee!

  46. Try putting their bowls with food and water and litter boxes in one room, and then slowly moving them to their permanent places. This helps them adjust more. Also put water for them all over the house (when they've adjusted and feel more comfortable).
When my cat was a kitten he loved chasing paper airplanes and then bringing them back, so you can make those as well.
Also regarding litter boxes: if you don't want them in plain site, there are small cupboards in which you can put them, for example: http://www.amazon.com/Designer-Catbox-Litter-Enclosure-Black/dp/B005AFMJWM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1405088560&sr=8-3&keywords=litter+box+enclosure

  51. I'm a new kitten owner too~ but I can tell you're much more experienced than I am haha. One thing I could suggest for Rocket; put a bell on him. He's much like my kitty, Arya, and is always hiding in little spots to nap in, which makes it difficult to find her. Since her collar was too big, we just improvised with a ribbon (comfortably secured, of course). And she looks, ADORABLE. Also, beware of laptop-scratching. Mine is beginning to use her claws and likes to paw at my screen or the back of my laptop. No permanent damage though, at least not yet haha~ much luck to you and your kittens! xx

  78. I got my cat as a kitten too and she was very nervous as she was a rescue and found all on her own ): I found it was best to let her come out of her shell in her own time - she had a little 'safe place' on the bookshelf that she gradually ventured further and further from, and found that just being quiet and calm helped her to feel confident enough to approach me. One day she crept up onto my knees and fell asleep on my lap, and now she's perfectly settled in! She's still a little wary of strangers and loud noises frighten her (she's definitely one of those cats who would run away from you in the street instead of coming over for some attention), but she's very happy and settled in our home and has the best life (: x

  90. Your kitties are SO CUTE! We've had kitties before, but nearly everyone in our home is allergic and now we just have dogs and parrots. I find it odd that we're allergic to cats, but not dogs. I'm just happy we can have one type of furry friend around!
You asked for some tips to help your little one's settle in, so here goes:
    1. Keep them in one room of your home for the first few weeks or so because if they have the run of the whole house it can get somewhat overwhelming.
    2. Prepare a little cardboard (or something more fancy, if you like) box for them with blankies and fluffy stuff for them so they can curl up and escape to somewhere cozy (sorry, I'm American and we spell cosy with a 'z' and if we spell it with an 's', we get that little red line under it that tells us we're spelling it wrong - lol, sorry for going off on a tangent, but me and tangents go together like watermelon and seeds and now that I'm saying that I realize that not all watermelons have seeds...oh, geez...I'm going to stop now).
    3. Make sure that you don't put your new little babes in a room with long curtains because they like to scurry up the curtains and then get stuck and the top! (Oh, no!)
    4. Get a scratching post. If they don't immediately take to it, rub some catnip on it.

  96. My only advice would be to get them used to bring groomed and having their paws/belly touched. Makes it much easier for when they're an adult and need their claws trimmed etc.

Also, be very careful with Darcy around them for the next few months. Mine got very nippy when their teeth came in and would nip (gentler than a bite - a playful thing, but bloody sore with pin-sharp teeth!). Would be horrible for her to become nervous of them if she gets a nip.

    Enjoy them - they're adorable!

  105. Too cute! I found my little kitty on the side of the road with her 2 other siblings. They were only 3-4 weeks old, much too young to be on their own. I gave away 2 kitties to loving homes and kept one, Shelby. Make sure Rocket and Zula don't have to fight over food. Feed them in separate bowls a couple feet apart. I'm guessing my Shelby and her siblings had to fight for food those first couple weeks because when ever they would eat they would growl violently the whole time and sometimes fight. Feed them separately to keep things nice and stress-free! Also have a container of treats they love, shake it, and whenever they come to the treats shaking give them one or two. That way when you do finally let them out it won't be horribly difficult to get them in. Another thing I would HIGHLY advise is to keep them in for as long as possible! I kept my lil one in for over 3 months. Taking her out once in a while whilst keeping a hand on her just so the outdoors wouldn't freak her out when she finally went out.

  109. Oh they are so pretty!!
When we got two kittens they were so playful. I just sat on the floor with them and let them do whatever so they could do whatever they were comfortable with. The one we still have lives at my dad's house and when I go there I get the most love and attention from her when I sit on the floor and wait for her to come to me.
Congrats and enjoy all the snuggles! :)

  113. Cats are great for teaching life lessons. My cat, for instance, will gain a little weight and still walk around like she's the most gorgeous creature alive. Also, she'll knock something over or fall and forgive herself insanely quickly. It's almost like I can see her saying "oops. Well I'm still the most awesome".

    ReplyDelete
  114. I'm sorry to be a spoilsport, but do you know that kittens are supposed to stay with their mother and siblings until they are at least 12 weeks old? At 10 weeks, they are most likely already weaned from their mother, but they still need to be around their kitty families to learn important skills that they'll need later in life. Thankfully, you got two kitties from the same litter so they'll at least have each other to lean on :) My advice at this stage would be to encourage Rocket to be around different people and situations so he doesn't become too shy, especially since he left his mother this early. Make sure that he learns to trust not only Zula, but his human family too :) Handle him (and Zula too, of course) as much as possible, but don't force him to stay in anyone's lap for a long time if he doesn't want to. Easy does it! You probably know this already, but still. Also, I would never encourage anyone to let their cats go out without supervision, since bad things happen everyday. Even if you trust them to never run away, there are people and other animals out there who would not hesitate to harm those little cuties. Trust me, I've seen this sort of thing too many times to count. Anyway, I'm sure you'll make a great home for them, they sound like a lovely duo! Looking forward to those kitty vlogs :3

  129. Aww they're so adorable! Cats are my favourite animal, we've had 6 so far haha. A tip for getting them to feel more at ease with you, this is going to sound a bit weird, is to squint at them for a second or two when they look at you. Cats do this as a sort of 'smile', its a bit strange but it really works :)

  166. Dont alter or change your routine or what you do for fear of 'scaring' them - I'm thinking specifically of visitors or vacumm cleaners. Cats will soon figure out what they actually like, dont like or dont mind. 2 years on two are still pretty freaked out by the vacuum cleaner but will just hide or hop out the window. When I first got them they hated visitors but now are all over anyone that will sit still for 2minutes.

If they are outdoor cats, try and get them in before it gets dark on warm summers evenings Bribing with treats helps. Otherwise they wont come in all night!
