Motivational Monday #8

Aloha Sprinklerinos,

Merry Monday you little munchkins of motivation. Too much? Yeah, maybe.

I hope your weekends were delightful and that you are ready to face the week with a glad heart and a happy face.

I saw this quote last week and thought it was excellent.

For the mostest of years I have struggled with who I wanted to be. Or, moreover, who I thought I should be. Some people wanted me to be clever, some people wanted me to be a career woman, some people wanted me to be a stay-at-home-mummy/wifey, some people wanted me to be quiet and pretty to look at, some people wanted me to be this, that, the other and everything else. It was exhausting.

I found myself trying very, very hard to please everyone. Once, about 10 years ago, I had a male friend who I regarded far too highly, say to me, 'I think girls are these lovely creatures who are hairless and pretty and smell nice and that's just perfect to me'. I heard that as, 'Louise, to be perfect you need to shave everything to within an inch of it's life, change the way you look and wear perfume 24/7'.

In reality, this probably wasn't the message he was trying to give me (I actually think he was just being nostalgic about the girlfriend who had just split with him!) but it's what I took from it. I never stopped to think that his view of perfection was only one view or that his view of perfection was as valid as my own view, I just took it as gospel and proceeded to spend plenty of time with a box of veet and feeling substandard. Not cool.

Frustratingly, I still do this a bit now. I'll hear someone say something about somebody else and feel I need to live up to the same standard in order to be as attractive as them, as successful as them, as whatever as them. It's such wasted effort.

Coco had it right. A girl should be two things- who and what she wants. If I want to let my leg hair grow with free abandon, why shouldn't I? If I'm not as pretty as Uni Guy's ex, have I failed? If I forgo a spritz of perfume, am I not as worthy as those who smell like all the delights of a summer meadow?

NO.

It's funny because when I'm going about my life, just plodding on, I am REALLY happy. BUT, it only takes one person to say one thing and I find myself having a little wobble of self resolve. This week I am going to focus on this quote and when I find myself self doubting or questioning who I am, I will remind myself that I am who and what I want to be and that I am proud to be that person.

I'm going to focus on living up to only my own standards and not bending or shaping myself into being something other people want and encourage you to do the same. It's a classic but I think that as long as you are doing your best, that's all you need to be.

Am I the only one who feels this way or do you ever find yourself having a little wobble too? Want to work on it together?

Toodlepip!

xx

  2. I get this constantly! I think the worst might be my friends telling me off for being terrible at story telling and jokes. I actually find myself worrying about it. Maybe I need to have words, because like you say; when Im doing my own thing and not worrying about it im very happy. Thanks Louise :) x

    1. Your friends are there to support you, not knock your confidence! I'm sure they're not perfect either. If you find yourself laughing it off when they make digs at you then try just staying quiet instead. It's not like you're having a full strop but you're not encouraging them. Failing that, have words, and if they don't learn you should move away from them maybe. Good luck!

  5. I'm the same way. For the longest time, everyone would always tell me I was so shy and quiet so I spent like half of my life believing that's all I was and that that's all I was capable of being. I'm slowly starting to overcome it now (even though I'm in my 20's) and it's been great having moved to a new location and starting over, getting to be anyone I want to be. :) x

    1. Ahhhh, I hate it when people tell people who they are. It's like we're told we're this one person and that's all we can be when it's not true! I'm so happy to see that you're moving on from all of that negativity!

  12. I have this wobble too and it frustrates me because I know I need to ignore it when people say something that gets to me as: 1) they wouldn't have meant it maliciously and 2) I am happy with who I am. It's so annoying when I doubt myself and because of this post, this week and past this week, if someone throws me off with a comment, I'm simply going to ignore the urge to think into it!

  13. I completely agree with every word of this. It seems as though growing up, we always put ourselves under immense pressure to please everybody else and we think that being who be want to be is not only not good enough, but also some sort of an irrelevant opinion that we have. And this sucks because while we may grow out of that later on, our teenage years really shape us as a person, and it's hard to break out of that later...

But great post, and very inspirational as well as motivational!

  22. This post actually was what I was just thinking this morning. I'm still trying to pleas other people, especially my parents. And now I'm unhappy with how things are at the moment and I really want to change it. But if I do what I want, then they will have a lot of negative comments on everything I do. So that's not something to look forward to. But I think I've tried to pleas them for a long enough time and now it's time to make myself happy. SO I'm all in! :)

  25. When I was growing up people said stupid things about me because I was a tomboy and people around me still think I'm a substandard ugly freak because I don't like what they think a girl should or I don't look pretty. I hate every advert and every person who thinks there's an ideal, one thing you should look like. I couldn't look like that if I tried, and I don't want to. I wish more people understood that behind that image or face there is a real person. When someone judges me for being ugly or boyish I don't think people know I am a sentient being inside a body, and I'm just trying to live like everyone else is. I can't be anyone but myself.

  26. Such a truthful and inspirational post! I think we, as women, pay far too much attention to other people's opinions even though we have a great intuition of our own. I hope we can all find a way to listen to our gut more and block out the comments of others.

Every one has different "standards" and we're going to tire ourselves trying to fit them all. So it's so much easier to have your own and just stick by them! :D

  39. Hi Louise
I just got one question. What if I really don't know what or who I want to be? I have been asking this question to myself lately, because I'm going through a phase where I need to make some huge decisions, like what I want to do with my live once I finished school. I feel like I'm supposed to know what I want to be or do but I have to be honest I have no clue. I've been doing one little step at a time but I have to say it's hard!

  41. Oh my goodness, Louise, your words in this post are PERFECT. I swear, it could have all come right out of my mouth (or my fingertips). I feel the exact same way. I'll go about my day, doing whatever, walking through the city in the sunshine, whatever, and feel really happy and confident and it'll only take one person who says something or even a picture of someone or even me looking at another woman who looks the way I'd like to look, and my confidence (and day) are ruined. It's unbelievable how we put ourselves down! The comparisons just need to stop.
I'm right there with ya, Louise! xx

  42. By far your best motivational monday yet! I want to print that quote and hang it somewhere I can see it everyday! Goes perfectly with what I think I finally achieved in 2013, which is to have more self-confidence!
I even wrote about it here: http://happylifeofacitygirl.blogspot.com/2014/03/you-know-you-are-confident-person-when.html

  43. I am forever trying to fight a battle with myself over my self confidence, and it is sooo tiring! You are not on your own, I can get dressed, do my hair and makeup all nice, strut into work thinking 'hey I look ok today' and then I can hear someone say 'oh isn't her hair beautiful' about someone else and suddenly I am in the toilets looking at my hair feeling like it looks like basil brush is sitting on my head. I think it's something all girls feel, I think it's a rarity for a girl to be 100% confident all the time. Sometimes it feels like other people are though, and you look at someone and think oh they are so confident in how they look, but they could be looking at you thinking, oh I wish I had her hair, or I wish my legs were like hers. Like you say, you have to remember that you don't have to have the perfect hair or the perfect outfit every day to be pretty and it doesn't mean you are any less pretty than someone else if you don't have perfect winged eyeliner one day! :) Bit of an essay there sorry, I got a bit carried away haha!
Love your blog Louise, you always post things I can seriously relate to! :)

  49. It often becomes easier with age to realize that you are placing more importance on other people's opinions than your own. Once you see that, it gets easier to weigh what others say against your own values and scale, allowing you to accept the bits you want and dismiss as "just their opinion" what bits you don't. There's still respect for others but it's tempered by respect for yourself.

  59. Dear Louise

I’m sorry I’m going to dictate one more thing of who you should be but I just have to, you owe yourself and us to be a writer and write a book already!

I think you’re already who you are and what you wanna be, EVERYTHING you talk about makes me so happy.. and I think it’s just because of how much you’re true to yourself with no filters whatsoever. I think comparison is what pushes us sometimes. It can make you miserable momentarily, but then once you shake it off you realize that the best version of the real you isn't even finalized. It’s a simple process of growing up and refining :)

  85. I love this!! I just turned 28 and decided instead of following the "safe" path I want to follow the path that makes me feel fulfilled and will allow me to live without regrets. Thank you so much for putting this up!

  88. I was just helping my sister write an essay about this. In the Great Gatsby Daisy says that the best thing a girl can be is a beautiful fool, and my sister and I were discussing what the best thing a girl could be really is. Lovely post!

  89. Louise!! I think you're amazing! Can totally relate though, I think a lot of us ladies can! "Comparison is the thief of joy" is one of my favourite quotes, because it is so true when we compare ourselves someone always has to come up "short" and it's usually yourself!

Bit embarrassing to admit this (especially as I am probably double the age of your average reader/subscriber!) but I have actually spent the last week watching pretty much every video uploaded to both of your channels, okay stalker/fangirl (can you be a fan girl at 32?!) much?! Because you're brilliant! So basically you're fab - you. For who you are so keep on being fabulous YOU! xxx

  91. I so needed to read something like this today. It's true sometimes we try so hard to please others and live in someone else's shadow, or I often find myself wanting to live up to my parents/sisters/religions/society's expectations, and it just makes it really hard to find yourself and be I don't know what you want to be. I think I'll be coming back to read this a few times in the future. Thanks Louise :)

  92. These posts are my favourite, Louise you always seem to understand exactly what I'm thinking - such a wonderful quote,I've always tried to think 'the only person you should be better than is the person you were yesterday!'.

  97. This is probably one of my favourite Motivational Monday posts Louise! It really helps reading this as im currently in High School and personally i think that's the place a lot of people try and find themselves and where they want to go in life and i think its important that people really just need to stay true to who they are and go by what they want as that's he only way to live truly happy in my opinion! So thanks for this blog post Louise! xxx

  98. Sometimes it's scary when you decide who you wanna be in life to imagine everything you have to do to become so. But as the saying goes: Time will pass by anyways, so let's do something everyday that will make our dreams come true!

  100. So weird that you right this because just this week I was feeling the same way. I always let what people say affect me and start trying to become what they think I should be. I had talk with my mom because I was having a hard time with what one person had said to me and she told me to not care what people say and be who you are and not give a damn what people think of you. Thank you so much Louise for writing this, you made me feel like I'm not alone.

  103. I think it takes a few years of experience until you know who you are.
When I was 13,14 I always tried to look like that singer, and this actor and I wanted hips like Christina Aguilera...and today:I'm fine with who I am :)

You're such a wonderful role model Louise, and thank you so much for being you :)

  107. What a great post! :) I wrote a bit about the idea of the 'sphere of influence' over on my blog the other day; it's about how humans (being social by nature) tend to really shape themselves by and for others - like, we'll suggest we love a band we've never heard of, or wear a trend we hate, or even just adopt mannerisms & styles of groups/people we admire. It's not necessarily a bad thing, until it makes us doubt ourselves like you've said in your post. I hope you're well Louise, xo!

  108. It reminds me of the quote, "be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind!" It's so easy to get wrapped up in what people expect of you and I am always wondering what other people think about me, do they see me as I see myself? Recently I've decided to try and forget about what other people think, even if its something as simple as making a random fashion choice!

  111. After I became a mum, I decided that I'm going to try to always be the person my two year old views me as; the strong person that can do what needs to be done and who will always protect and love her. If that means that I won't get to shave my armpits for four days, then so be it.
