Toner-Tastic?

Aloha Bloggerinos,

As you'll know from my previous Battle of the Cleansers post (HERE), I am currently on a skincare mission. I have basically good skin, but I know if I look after it better, it will thank me for it in the long run.

So, I have been properly cleansing, and moisturising and have recently added toning into the equation.

I will admit, I don't really get this Toner business. Tightening the skin? Ummm Ok but I don't really like tight skin and instantly want to slather moisturiser on it to sooth the tightness. I've half looked into this terribly important matter but I'm still not 100% clear. If you know more about why it's important to tone or what precisely it does for you, puurrlleeaasee let me know because I'm just being a bit of a beauty sheep and doing it because I feel I should! Ha.

So, on Boxing Day I bought a 250g bottle of Lush Breath of Fresh Air Toner. I would love to tell you how much it retails for but the Lush website is still down due to hacking. I think maybe the £7-8 mark. Hoowwwweevvveerr, prepare to be jealous.....I got it for free!!

How cool is that? I don't know about you, but I really do think Lush are good to their customers and that's definitely part of what makes me go back there so often. That and I luuurrrvvee the products of course!

I have been using this toner regularly (not everyday, slaps wrist) for about a month. Now, I really like it, it smells fresh, doesn't irritate my skin at all, makes me feel like I'm doing the right thing skincare wise annddd apparently is boosting my face with vitamins and all sorts of goodness. That's it.

I haven't noticed anything different, good or bad, in my skin. I feel pretty 'meh' about it all. I have tried applying it in a variety of aways- spraying directly onto skin, spritzing on dry or damp cotton wool and applying to face and even squirting onto my hands and patting on.

So really, I'm throwing the ball in your court dear Bloggerinos, what shall I do? Am I doing it wrong? I want to join this Toner club but can't find the bloomin' door!

Please help!

Toodlepip!

xx

  1. No idea how to use toners either, really, except for removing makeup? Still, it's nice that you got it for free :)

  2. wowww! I love Lush, that's amazing! I never use toner (lazy) but Liz Earle tweeted this today...
"Tip from Liz: Many of our customers ask us why they need to use a toner after cleansing. Often ignored, toner is essential for closing pores and preparing your skin for your moisturiser. Opt for an alcohol-free toner to calm and soothe your skin."

so i'm probably going to start using a bit more. hope that helps :)

  4. Ohhh i am jealous, I want free stuff! :P
I think, but am probably wrong, that you use toner after cleanser to close your pores, then when you put moisturiser on it won't clog them. Also i've heard it removes the tiny bit of dirt/cleanser left on you face :)

  6. Do you like your 9-5 Cleansing Lotion? I feel like it's generally useless and doesn't even remove light makeup! Wah :( But I have been using it after exfoliating and it seems to be OK.

  7. Being a qualified beauty therapist, and my college's current facial therapist of the year, the question made my eyes light up :)

Toning is important because it closes the pores- and therefore getting a tight feeling. It does also remove traces of make up you may have missed, product thats left on the skin yadda yadda yadda.
Closing the pores means that dirt and pollution won't get trapped in them and therefore making the skin cleaner. And sebum won't get into them, and won't harden, thus no blackheads :)
Also, the word "slather" made me kinda cringeeee!
You only need a small amount unless you have reallllly dry skin. Too much and the skin won't absorb it all :(

    Hope it's helped :)

  9. I use the Breath of Fresh Air toner and personally do it the same way you do-I spritz it onto a cotton pad then applying it, just because I don't like spraying it directly on my face. I actually do notice a difference, and use it, as pictured with in the photo, 9 to 5 cleanser and my moisturiser, surprisingly, is from Aldi! It's actually brilliant too! I love the 9 to 5 cleanser, as it does the job, smells gorgeous with the Orchid Oil and feels really nice on my skin. When I use the toner alongside, my skin just looks more healthy!
