Tips for My Teenage Self

Aloha Sprinklerinos,

Luckily, my teenage years are firmly in the past, but every now and then I look back on them and think about things I would have done differently or the mistakes I made or the bad judgement calls I took.

My darling sister is now walking down adolescent alley and I find myself offering advice (wanted or unwanted haha) at every opportunity.

(My lovely little sister)

If I could board a time machine and visit 16 year old Louise, there are a few things I'd tell her.

Advice To My 16 Year Old Self

1. It's OK not to be liked by every single person. Obviously, there were girls in my school that didn't like me. Throughout my entire school life this upset me. I felt like I had failed in some way. It never occured to me that nobody can please everybody and that there will always be someone who doesn't take to you. You're not a bad person, you haven't failed, the people that don't like you aren't bad people. It's just life and it's normal and it's fine. Relax.

2. GHDs will soon be invented so hang on in there. Naturally, my hair is a frizzy triangle mop. We have a love hate relationship. Throughout my teen years I had to tame my locks with a babyliss steam straightener (remember those?!) OR do that oh-so-sexy slicked back to all buggery style. Thankfully, at 17-18, GHD's came in and my hair was saved!!

3. Take the good and ignore the bad. I had a very turbulent relationship with my Father as I grew up and often our house would be a very unpleasant place to live. I would feel angry and upset about this for the majority of the time but I wish I had let a lot of those negative emotions go. I wish I had had the maturity to enjoy my Father's good moods and ignore his bad ones. If I could go back, I would take a 'that's your problem, not mine' stance.

4. Work hard at school. Although my job has little to do with the things I studied, I definitely didn't reach my full potential and it's entirely my own fault. I was far too preoccupied with socialising and messing about to do my homework or take a real interest. I'd say to teen Louise, 'Stop shillyshallying around and focus on your books, if you don't, you'll regret it when you're in your mid twenties and have no idea what the difference between hard and soft water is or struggle to work out with the price of something with 20% off!!".

5. Enjoy being young. I'm not old now but I certainly didn't appreciate my early youth whilst I was in it. I was always in a rush to do the next thing (driving lessons, dancing in bars, going to uni, having a boyfriend, moving out etc) that I don't think I stopped to relish what I was doing enough. If I were able to go back I would just enjoy a time of cinema trips with pals, long lay ins and pocket money!

The more I think about it, the more I would change (those boot cut stretchy black trousers with a pale pink angora jumper for one) but a) you have lives to lead and b) I have a feeling that you're supposed to make those mistakes in your teens to allow you to grow into adulthood.

I'll check back in ten years and let you know what I would have done better in my twenties!

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Toodlepip!

xx

  1. I'm only 18, but I would tell me from last year to nit worry about uni applications and telling my parents I don't want to go, because if I had applied anyway I would be miserable and wouldn't have applied for the beauty course I'm taking next year, and I would be so so so stressed about exams I wouldn't have coped :)

  2. The main thing I would tell my teenage self is not to worry so much and just have fun. Hell maybe I should be telling my 20 year old self that too xx

  3. Im also 18, but I've spent most of my life caring so much about what people think about me and if im 'cool' enough. So i'm going to take a spin on your lovely post, and try to take action. So what if my nails aren't perfectly manicured or if my hair doesn't flow down my back like Ariel's.
Thanks Louise! Your posts never cease to inspire me! X

  4. I'd tell myself that it's fine to be called. 'walking dictionary' and tormented for liking English lessons because by the time you're 15 you'll be a published writer and that'll be the biggest 'fudge you' to all the mean people :) x

  5. Even though I am still a teenager at college, the advice that I would give myself if I could meet myself when I was in high school, I would say a) don't care about what other people think of you so much. B) focus on my studies and c) don't judge people on their appearance or what other people have said about them. Luckily, I think I have changed and I am following these steps not that I have moved into college and met a lot more people. Loveeeee your blogs and vlogs! X

  6. i'd tell myself to just BE myself! and if others don't like it, don't worry about it! you will never ever ever please everyone. but truly being yourself is the only way to make genuine friends and find real love :)

  7. I'm 27 and therefore a little older than you, Louise (wink, wink). I'd probably tell my teenage self to be a bit more daring. I really let some great oppurtunities go by, because I was too scared. For example, I should have gone abroad, when I had the chance to.
I would tell myself to learn and experience as much as possible and to always think outside the box. And I would encourage myself to listen to my inner voice - it has always been right in the long run.

  11. I sure could have used some of this advice when I was in high school! I feel like I've forgotten what I did in my life up until the age of about 19 or 20. Where did all this time go?! I would tell myself to work hard at school/uni, and to not worry about that boy in high school because he turned out to be a big waste of time - I found a very lovely one a few years later anyway. :)

  22. I agree with everything you have said. One thing I would add would be to learn to love myself - my thighs were never really that big and in fact, they are bigger now and I'm happier with my mum tum and my panda eyes. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I think your 'mistakes' have made you into a rather delightful possum Louise. I think the same can be said for everyone - I needed to learn the lesson that pink and blue eye shadow wasn't, and never will be, a good look for me! xx

  23. im almost not a teeanger (3 weeks to go :/) and i agree with everything. I wish I had of worked harder at school! & I did the slicking my hair back into a ponytail before the days of GHDs - eeeew! hah!

  24. my advice to my teenage self has to be , not to let people bring me down , to believe in myself and my dreams and to go for it if i really want something , even if people tell me the opposite , just don't listen ! i spend so many years of my life listening to people telling me not to do this or that , telling me that i would never make it anyway .. sadly I've waisted many years because of other people.

  27. I would have told myself to enjoy it abit more, coz I didn't realise I wouldn't have been able to to alot by the time I was 21 I naively believed I would carry on like I was until I got my transplant or just died, so I definitley wish I had enjoyed my teens years more rather than stressing out about things that in thr grand scheme of things really didn't matter :-)

  29. I'd tell my 16 year old self to stop taking things too seriously, enjoy life, friends and family. Don't take things for granted and talk to your sisters more. They'll be there for you in a few years time!

Thanks Louise! As always you share wise words of wisdom :) Keep up the good work!

  30. I'd tell my 16 year old self to push through my anxiety more, because although it would have been tough, it would have been worth it to enjoy school while i could. I would also have told myself not to follow the crowd so much and to embrace my individuality! Love this post Louise xxx

  32. Louise, you wouldn't even be able to tell that you've had past struggles by the way you present yourself. I feel like troubled pasts can make people bitter but you're very self-assured and happy and it's great! :) I like how you took a bad situation and made it shape you in a positive way. You are obviously a very strong woman :)

  46. Wonderful advice, Louise! Superficially, I would tell my teenage self to leave my eyebrows ALONE. I was too shy to tell my mom to have my (horribly ugly and thick bushy) eyebrows professionally done so I attempted to fix them myself and it was just the ugliest thing ever. Took me YEARS to grow them back to normal and so now I'm really self-conscious about always making sure to have nicely groomed eyebrows.
