Aloha Sprinklerinos,
This past year I have had the good fortune to stay over in quite a few beautiful hotels. For me, what makes or breaks a hotel is the bed. I like the sheets to be crisp, the pillows to be plentiful and the mattress fit for a princess. In short, I am a high maintenance diva who knows exactly what she wants!
When we moved into our home 4 years ago (wow time flies!), we went from a fully furnished rental to a sparse in-need-of-repairs house. The very first thing we bought was a bed and despite it being a rushed purchase, to this day I am happy with our decision.
We opted for the 'Liervik' bed frame and Sultan Flokenes memory foam mattress from IKEA, which totalled £505. One of the best £505 I have ever spent. Added to that we spent £30 on a reeeaaaaallllyyy (I'm talking in excess of 5m) string of white LED fairy lights to wrap round the bedframe. Ikea only seem to stock these lights around Christmas so if you are after some, keep your eyes peeled.
For 4 years we just threw on our current (polyester filled I think?) duvet which was super cosy and regular old pillows. The only person who regularly gets new pillows is Miss Darcy and that's because she is a sweaty little sleeper and I want her to feel fresh when she wakes up.
So, back to the first paragraph. After staying in some b-e-a-utiful hotels this year, I decided I wanted to bring a little bit of that luxury into my bedroom and so splashed out on some gorgeous new bedding to give my slumber a little zing.
We opted for a John Lewis Goose Down 10.5 tog duvet in 'King Size' despite our bed only being a double- we want extra cosyness. I was a luxury buy at £160 but ermihgerd every time I hear that crinkle and rustle I think my heart melts just a little bit. To go with the duvet we bought the Olivia Bedding as all our other covers would have been too small. The sheeting is incredibly soft with just enough detail to make it interesting but not enough to clash with anything else in the room- I have always been a sucker for white bedding.
The pillows are hollowfibre and from Dunnes Homestore for £13 each. I considered purchasing feather ones but my purse was hurting and asked me to hold out a while!
We also bought Baby Glitter new bedding but I will save that for another post if you are interested? Oh, and what did we do with our old duvet? We laid it ontop of the mattress and then lay the sheet over that- hai there most amazing night sleep ever sandwiched between two duvets. Give it a go, your well rested body will thank you.
Overall, a big ol' spend but oh-so-worth it. I have completely abandoned my home office and have worked from my bed almost every evening this week! What a life!!
In time I will be adding more pillows and maybe a throw, but for now, this is my haven.
Please do tell me what you do to make your bed your nest and if you have any 'best night sleep ever' tips, leave them in the comments!
Love those fairy lights!

ReplyDeleteThis is EXACTLY what I've been up to lately too! I love the feel of luxurious hotel bedding! I have a queen bed but got myself a king size feather doona a cover to go with it. And the feeling of 1200 thread count sheets! Such a diva, but totally worth it! :P Love your post :) XO

That is gorgeous (we have a king size duvet on our double bed too) and I desperately want a feather duvet but my asthma doesn't allow for this in the least :( . I am happy with good old M&S best quality polyester duvet with modal sheets on instead. Maybe one day they will come up with a down duvet that doesn't set my asthma off! x
ReplyDeleteHave you tried a micro-fibre duvet, it's a man made duvet but feels more or less like goose down. I have this one: http://www.outofeden.co.uk/.-Microfibre-Hotel-Duvets-13-5-Tog-~2552.htm
DeleteIt rustles etc and the best thing is that you don't get that weird smell like you do with goose down :)
Love this! Sleeping between two duvets is the loveliest and comfiest thing ever! x

You have no idea how torturous it is to read this when I have to put up with a very cheap mattress in my uni accommodation! Super jealous, but thanks for the ideas for the future :)
ReplyDeleteI'm moving house a week today and bought a new duvet set yesterday. So excited to start getting my new place sorted out and decorated just right! New duvet is next on the list, although I didn't think to do that under the sheet trick with the old duvet!

I have a weakness for comfortable bedding as well. When I get my own place I want to be able to buy a KING sized bed with the most luxurious bedding. I think the bed is a place where it's ok to splurge because it's where we recharge! We should feel as comfortable as we can when we sleep!

there's literally nothing nicer to me that freshly washed sheets, I always sleep so much better! I love your bed, can't wait to get a new one when I move house

Its definitely worth investing in nice bedding. We got a memory foam mattress and it is amazing. I spent £50 on a pillow, which was the best £50 I have ever spent. I've had the pillow 3 years and it hasn't flattened at all. It is a springy as the day I bought it. I'm all for getting a bigger duvet than your bed too. It saves fighting over it in the night and is so much more snuggly :)

I have the same bed (though with a different Ikea foam mattress) and I love it. It doesn't hurt that the frame is on the tall side, because we can hide quite a few boxes and things underneath, haha. This may sound odd but my "best night sleep" decision was to get two separate duvets for me and my boyfriend - both of us are blanket-stealers, so before we had two one of us would always wake up cold. :/ Of course I got matching ones, so they don't look ridiculous sitting on top of each other.
ReplyDeleteOhh your bedding matches your wallpaper amazingly. I loooove this. *envy*

Oh multiple duvets are where it's at. I can be a bit if a boisterous sleeper and a massive duvet stealer whist I'm asleep, so my boyfriend and I agreed to have a duvet each! Poor Darren kept waking up in the night wondering where the duvet had gone, but now he has his own, he doesn't need to worry. I've no idea why I turn so greedy as soon as I fall asleep!

I LOVE your bed! I am moving out to my first appartment in a couple of weeks and I was still looking for the perfect bedscene. I am definitely getting the same bed as yours with the lights! It's so beautiful and yet so simple and not expensive at all! You really are such an inspiration Louise - you're so real and I feel like I can relate to you so much. Sorry for the emotional comment haha.
ReplyDeleteThe 'putting the duvet on top of the mattress and putting a sheet over' idea sounds amazing! A very cosy nights sleep indeed!

Please do some research into down duvets. The process of collecting goose feathers is extremely cruel, and often the geese are slaughtered as a result.
ReplyDeleteMy top tip for a good nights sleep is sprinkle some lavender oil onto your pillow case, it works a treat :) Both my mum and I have serious sleeping issues, and lavender oil is like our fairy dust!

I'm terrible at sleeping in general, but the biggest contributor to sleepless nights is not having the right blanket/comforter. I can't sleep without MY blanket, but it's not like it's a baby blanket deal. I've only had the one I use now for three years. It's just that, once I get used to a blanket, sleeping soundly without it is near impossible.

ReplyDeleteI'm really surprised Matt didn't ask to have some 'manly' colours added to the room lol. We have recently decorated our room and even though we decided on a monochrome New York theme i didn't want it to be too manly so my boyfriend agreed to me adding some girly touches here and there. Still, if you can dominate your bloke with a pink and white bedroom, i salute you lol.
