Patio Parties

Aloha Sprinklerinos,

Summer is officially upon us and this year we are working on our outside space.

For four years we neglected our garden in favour of things like fixing the electrics, installing a kitchen, getting married and welcoming a new baby. Now though, we feel as though we have the time and energy to make it a more usable place and that is exactly what we are doing.

To celebrate making a start (and that is all we have done, a start), we had friends over for cocktails and BBQ and as per, I got a little over excited with my glasswear. I don't know if I've ever told you this but I have a real obsession with coloured pretty glasses. They just look like jewels. Most of these glasses were bought from a vintage homestore.

Vintage_glasses

I made a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, left out a heap of glasses and let people serve themselves- far easier than constantly jumping up and down.

Vintage_glasses

To make delicious drinks look even more appealing I used mirrors (which I originally bought for a craft project that failed) as trays. This helps emphasise pretty table wear and adds a touch of whimsy.

As dusk set in I bought out drinks in rinkydink milk bottles (which Darcy couldn't stop playing with) and replaced the big jugs for tea lights.

Vintage_glasses

It was such a good night. There were about ten of us and we all ended up in pjs and hoodies, grazing on food, chatting and laughing. We lit candles all around the garden, got the fire pit working and stayed out til gone midnight. The great thing was, since this party was at our own house, Darcy's bedtime routine wasn't effected and she thought everyone was there just for her.

It's at events like this when I look round and realise how very rich we are. No, we don't have amazing cars (we share a ford!) and I don't buy designer bags but we have so much love and laughter, our good health, a beautiful daughter and pay our bills on time. Really truly, I am so happy these days.

What makes you feel rich?

  4. I was actually just talking about my parents about something similar! I am trying to decide what I want to do for a career and was concerned about how much money I will need to make to support myself and all that and my parents told me to not be concerned with income. Of course, they said, to make sure I could afford to pay bills and everything, but that it is more important to do what you love than to have a career that you hate, but being able to buy a ton of material things and be rich. They told me it is much more important to love what you do and the people you're surrounded with, so I guess that is what makes me feel rich! And, of course, my dogs and kitties (:
I'm so glad to hear that you are in such a good place in your life! You really deserve it!

I haven't been feeling very rich lately. I've been freaking out about all these student loans I'm going to be stuck with in just a few years! It's terrifying! Though, I am very grateful for the little bit I do have.

  9. Oh that looks so lovely Louise:) I feel life in general makes me feel rich. I'm so lucky that I have the freedom to do what I want, when I want and how I want to do it. There's so many people who don't have this opportunity and I feel priviledged.
So really what I'm saying is; freedom makes me rich

  10. Looks wonderful!
Just a little tip, don't put that many candles close to each other. They give of so much heat that suddenly everything can go up in flames and it's really hard to put out. Every christmas here in Sweden they show how wrong it can get when you put those kind of candles to close/or to many of them close together.

  25. Such a lovely post! I've been making an effort to go out into my garden more and feel much better for it.

I know this sounds odd - but I suffer with depression and anxiety and when I'm in the midst of a really bad day it's usually then that I feel rich... I remind myself that actually I have an amazing family for support, an excellent boyfriend to share my time with etc. Odd, but it can help the 'slumps.' :)

  125. The different glasses look lovely and so whimsical!

I feel more blessed than rich when I read about or see local or global poverty and the hardships the people are forced to endure. It always makes me realize how thankful I should be for the life I live.

  126. Sounds so perfect. The drinks and the tealights looks amazing. Who needs expensive cars and lots of material possesions when you have amazing family and friends.

  130. Placing the glasswear on the mirrors is the greatest idea ever, it makes them look just that bit more special than they already are!
You said, it's only a start with your garden but I can tell you, a garden is so dynamic, you'll probably never really truly finish it. Not because you can't but just because I find there is always something to do, some flowers to plant or some pretty things to put up and decorate it to make the most beautiful place outside :) I'm so grateful I could grow up with a idyllic garden, Darcy is very lucky you are enabling her to grow up with greens around her!
